They can accommodate parties from 25 to 250.
The decor is beautifully art deco. The original Lawry's is in Beverly Hills - and yes, this is where Lawry's Seasoned Salt was created.

Restauranteur Charlie Palmer is building a 400 room hotel in Las Vegas to be named The Palmer. I know it is his name, but I think there is too much similarity with The Palms , which is already well established. I believe it will cause confusion in the mind of the consumer.

Mob Museum

Las Vegas plans to open a Mob Museum. And I say it is about time. The mob scene is part of the history of Las Vegas and officials here have always tried to ingore that past in hopes it would go away. Las Vegas mobsters were a colorful lot and are just as important to Las Vegas history as Al Capone is to Chicago.

Cili is a great place for an off-site event. They can handle groups from 15 to 1500. They are right on the gorgeous Bali Hai Golf Course, just south of Mandalay Bay, right on The Strip. There is a large outdoor deck area that overlooks the golf course - see photo. Cili opened as a Wolfgang Puck restaurant, but he only ran it for a short while. Here is their virtual tour. (It is pronounced see-lee and is Balinese for prosperity, good health and great fortune.)

The banquet room is divisible and will seat 140 or hold 200 for a reception . They also close the dining room for private parties. They have a great view of The Strip. They are across the street from the south side of the airport, so you can see the planes take off.

What happened to all of the neon?

Remember when it seemed like every inch of The Strip was covered in neon? Where did it all go? For a long time the Neon Graveyard at the YESCO Sign Company stored them, and it was not open to the public. You may recall seeing the Graveyard in many movies and television shows that were taped here. The Neon Museum has taken many of these signs and restored them. They have created a Boneyard for signs that are waiting to be restored. Tours are available, if you are looking for something different to do with a small group.

Dates and Rates

Often times the availability of rooms and the prices of the rooms depend on what else is going on in the valley. It may be a huge convention, like the Consumer Electronic Show which is here in early January each year, or it may be the National Rodeo Finals in early December.

You can check the convention calendar and you will find the CES Show, but not the NFR. You need to check this page for big events that are not related to conventions, but fill up the hotels.

Do you need to close down a street for an event? Or apply for a liquor permit for an off-site event?

Here is a link to the City of Las Vegas Public Right of Way Event Permit Request. And here is a link to the Clark County Application/Permit Liquor Caterer Event which must be filed at least 3 days in advance of the event.

You may not be aware, but The Strip and the airport are not in the City of Las Vegas, they are in unincorporated Clark County. The dividing line in the Strip area is Sahara. Everything north of Sahara is in the City of Las Vegas.

Some rules and regulations differ between the city and the county. Particularly rules from the fire marshall. Be sure you are meeting the right set of requirements.

Vegas Today and Tomorrow

Vegas Today and Tomorrow is a site that keeps track of all of the new building going on. They have an interesting link to Dream Projects that were never built. THE map is the best Strip area map I have seen.

Pizza

Where do you go for great pizza in Las Vegas? Metro Pizza. Real Italian pizza made from family recipes. They also have salads and pastas - and they deliver. There are four locations - one is just west of The Strip on Koval. Only one is a good distance away, in Henderson. One is to the east on Tropicana and the other is to the west at Flamingo and Decatur.

Las Vegas Birthday

Yesterday was my birthday. I had a day at the Canyon Ranch Spa in the Venetian, then had dinner at B&B, Iron Chef Mario Batali's restaurant, also at the Venetian.

The Canyon Ranch Spa is luxurious. They have a
spa restaurant, where we had a light lunch. I had the Caesar Salad and the Chicken Pot Stickers. Delicious, and healthy. The spa has everything you could possibly need: showers and dressing areas are stocked with plenty of hair dryers, hair spray, deoderant, soaps, shampoos, etc. Everywhere you look there are bowls brimming with fresh fruit, tables with bottled water, juices, hot tea. The massage tables are nice and wide. The massage and and facial that I had were top notch. I was told that the spa will soon be doubling in size and adding another full-service restaurant that will be open later and will be accessible from outside the spa.

You pretty much have to be a foodie to enjoy Mario Batali's creations. A table that was seated next to us left after persuing the menu. I heard one lady say, "they don't even have a basic salad." If you want basic food, B&B Ristorante is not for you.

The menu changes seasonally, but here are some sample offerings from last night:

Best Suites in Vegas

The Trip Advisor picks the Signature Suites at the MGM Grand as the best suite value in Las Vegas. (from Hotel Chatter)

Favorite Restaurants

Old Las Vegas was the Land of Cheap Buffets. They were created to keep the gambler in the casino and were considered loss leaders.

New Las Vegas not only has added Upscale Buffets, but some pretty fantastic restaurants as well.

The best buffets are at the Bellagio and Planet Hollywood, but they are anything but cheap.

You can still find cheap in Las Vegas. But everyone wants the Bellagio Buffet at the Sahara Buffet prices.

If you can afford an upscale, pricey dinner, here are some excellent options for you to consider:

Stripsteak - Mandalay Bay. San Francisco's Michael Mina is one of the finest chefs around. He has two other restaurants in Las Vegas.

Bouchon - Thomas Keller, of Napa Valley's French Laundry fame. In the Venetian.

Lawry's The Prime Rib - If you love prime rib, you will LOVE Lawry's. Located on Flamingo Road, a few blocks east of The Strip.
